RaRa by Heather Jansch

RaRa was modelled and named after the artist’s own Arabian horse.

This was the first complete driftwood horse of Jansch’s to be cast in bronze, and she was quickly joined by her stable mate Beethoven, the two forming a pair that the artist frequently exhibited and sold toegther (the Tang horses, such as Cicero, had preceded them, but these were a more traditional plaster model).

We believe that the moulds for the bronze of RaRa have been found, but no records about the status of the edition exist; as a result the edition is currently closed. Additionally, the driftwood original has long since disappeared. It is not known whether it was sold or destroyed in the casting process.

RaRa (head) has remarkably similar features to this peice, and because of this it leads us to believe that it must be an adaptation of the original sculpture.

This piece forms part of Heather Jansch’s series of small driftwood sculptures, but other examples of her work include her enduringly popular life-size foals, such as Dylan and, most famously, her life-size horses, best illustrated by The Eden Horse. Her other small work for interiors included bronze sculptures inspired by Tang Dynasty imagery (Jeunesse for instance), but was perhaps at its best with the creation of sculptures like Etalon. Heather also produced a series of dancers and warrior women.

Our goal is to finish the editions she began, and to achieve this we are following an active programme of casting from Heather’s moulds. As a result, Heather’s work continues to be exhibited on a regular basis, and can currently be seen at The Diehl Gallery in Jackson, WY, and Sculpture by the Lakes in Dorset, UK. Many of her sculptures remain available for purchase because of the casting programme.

Our exhibitions page has details of upcoming shows. If you are considering a purchase and would like to arrange a viewing or additional photographs you are welcome to get in touch.
