The Eden Horse by Heather Jansch
The Eden Horse by Heather Jansch is arguably her most famous work and was originally commissioned by Tim Smit KBE. It stood at the entrance to The Eden Project for many years and was one of the first of Jansch’s life-size pieces to so palpably capture the spirit of the horse in an almost tangible sense. As a result, visitors to The Eden Project were often halted in their tracks in amazement.
Jansch’s fascination with the Arabian breed is clearly in evidence in The Eden Horse and so it shares the vitality of her very best work, rivalling the dynamism of the likes of Sugar Plum and Etalon.
Sadly however, time, and the British weather, took a toll on The Eden Horse and so the piece was retired from view a few years ago. Because of the deterioration, back at the studio, a project to restore the piece was quietly underway. Today the restoration of the original is virtually complete, but because of the inherent fragility of the original materials, it will never again be suitable for exhibition. In order to avoid losing this exquisite sculpture to history, funding for the creation of the first bronze in an edition of five is currently being raised.
Because it was its original home, the first cast is reserved for The Eden Project, but if you would like to know more about The Eden Horse or would like to commission a cast of this iconic sculpture, we would be delighted to hear from you.
Other sculpture by Heather Jansch
This piece forms part of Heather Jansch’s series of life-size horses. Other examples of her work include her enduringly popular life-size foals such as Dylan. Her smaller work for interiors included sculptures like Jeunesse from her Tang series, and the magnificent Etalon, regarded by many as her very finest work. In a departure from her usual practice, Heather also produced a series of dancers and warrior women.
We are following an active programme of casting from Heather’s moulds to finish the editions she began and so Heather’s work continues to be exhibited on a regular basis, and can be seen at The Diehl Gallery in Jackson, WY, and Sculpture by the Lakes in Dorset, UK. As a result, many of her sculptures remain available for purchase.
