Etalon by Heather Jansch

An early piece, however “Etalon” was, in the artist’s opinion, one of her most accomplished small sculptures, reaching the zenith of her practice in mixed media sculpture of the time. Soon after its creation came a change in scale and the eventual transition in to bronze. This piece has not been moulded for bronze and is one of the few driftwood and mixed media originals still available.

The sense of movement is so palpable that one would be forgiven for thinking that Etalon froze a picosecond before your eyes came to rest on him and in that sense he shares much with his larger stable mate The Eden Horse.

Etalon is the one of the only sculptures by Jansch that both signed and dated by the artist.

This sculpture was long considered too complex to cast in bronze without completely destroying the original, but recent advances in scanning technology might change that, and so we are currently investigating the production of a small bronze edition.

Etalon was displayed at Exeter Crematorium during the artist’s funeral service. Contact us if you would like to discuss commissioning a bronze.

This piece forms part of Heather Jansch’s series of small driftwood sculptures, but other examples of her work include her enduringly popular life-size foals, such as Dylan and most famously, her life-size horses, best illustrated by The Eden Horse. Her other small work for interiors included bronze sculptures inspired by Tang Dynasty imagery (Jeunesse for instance). In a departure from her usual practice, Heather also produced a series of dancers and warrior women.

Because we are following an active programme of casting from Heather’s moulds, to finish the editions she began, Heather’s work continues to be exhibited on a regular basis, and can currently be seen at The Diehl Gallery in Jackson, WY, and Sculpture by the Lakes in Dorset, UK. Many of her sculptures remain available for purchase as a result.
