Shaker – About This Piece

In the heads, Jansch on occasion approaches the abstract, and focuses on the essence of the horse, and the essence of the material. Shaker is one such, and catches the viewer unawares; walking around him a horse leaps out of a sudden, almost unexpected (in much the same way as Sweet September).

Shaker was the second of Heather’s life-size heads to be moulded for bronze, but the first to have a cast taken from those moulds (Jansch’s sculpture Madrugada was moulded many years ago, but has only recently had a cast produced from those moulds).

Shaker’s expression shares somewhat of the sense of indominable spirit shown by Jansch’s life-sized sculpture Resolute, and one might imagine that he would make an excellent gate guardian. Would-be transgressors crossing any portal he watched would face a nerve-wracking interrogation under his penetrating gaze.

In common with Jansch’s other large heads, the original survived the mould making process well, and so Shaker is available in both the original driftwood and bronze (the bronze is pictured here).
