Buccaneer by Heather Jansch
Buccaneer was the last sculpture made by Heather Jansch. It was completed only months before her death in July 2021.
It forms part of a long running series of similar sculptures, and because of the enduring popularity of Heather’s work, was the only example found in the artist’s estate: each of the others having found a home. Although made using her typical medium, Jansch also often used found objects in her work and Buccaneer is no exception.
Because of the complexity of the sculpture, Buccaneer will not be cast in bronze, and so he represents the last opportunity to own a piece that so typifies Jansch’s work. Other pieces of similar scale, but differing style, include Beethoven and Etalon.
From 5th October 2024 to 6th January 2025 Buccaneer will be on exhibition at Messums West.

Other sculpture by Heather Jansch
This piece forms part of Heather Jansch’s series of small driftwood sculptures, but other examples of her work include her enduringly popular life-size foals, such as Dylan and most famously, her life-size horses, best illustrated by The Eden Horse. Her other small work for interiors included bronze sculptures inspired by Tang Dynasty imagery (Jeunesse for instance). In a departure from her usual practice, Heather also produced a series of dancers and warrior women.
Because we are following an active programme of casting from Heather’s moulds, to finish the editions she began, Heather’s work continues to be exhibited on a regular basis, and can currently be seen at The Diehl Gallery in Jackson, WY, and Sculpture by the Lakes in Dorset, UK. Many of her sculptures remain available for purchase as a result.
