Chinoise by Heather Jansch

“Chinoise” is part of the series of sculptures inspired by ancient Tang Dynasty horses, and represents Jansch’s first foray in to bronze casting (prior to perfecting the technique for creating casts of the driftwood work). The plaster original of this piece still exists, as do the moulds for the bronze.

These small sculptures stand outside Heather’s usual practice, and at first are not recognisably a “Jansch”, however, the closer you look, and the more time you spend with them, the more you realise that the artistry of the sculpture is just as compelling as Heather’s usual oeuvre, or more so, in a sense, because it’s there, without the signature style.

The Tang series also includes: Cicero, Jeunesse, The Calling, and Magic Horse.

This piece forms part of Heather Jansch’s series of sculptures inspired by Tang Dynasty imagery, but other examples of her work include her enduringly popular life-size foals, such as Clover and most famously, her life-size horses, best illustrated by The Eden Horse. Heather also made smaller work for interiors, and example being the magnificent Etalon, which regarded by many as her very finest work. In a departure from her usual practice, Heather also produced a series of dancers and warrior women.

We are following an active programme of casting from Heather’s moulds to finish the editions she began and so Heather’s work continues to be exhibited on a regular basis, and can be seen at The Diehl Gallery in Jackson, WY, and Sculpture by the Lakes in Dorset, UK. As a result, many of her sculptures remain available for purchase.
