Heather Jansch Artist Profile
Renowned British sculptor Heather Jansch (1948 – 2021) had a lifelong passion to achieve mastery of the equine form.
“Heather is a genius with an eye for nature that in another generation would have seen her burnt as a witch; now she is rightly considered one of our country’s finest artists. If you were to ask the visitors to Eden, ‘What is your favourite work here?’ it would be the horse, and we gave the entrance to our kingdom to this horse. Richard III, see it and weep.”
Tim Smit, KBE.,
Founder of the Eden Project, UK
Heather Jansch pioneered the use of driftwood as a medium and although frequently copied, was but rarely rivalled. Because her work has the capacity to capture the vitality of the horse in a manner the evokes the same emotions as the animal itself, there is a spirit and life to the sculptures that defies belief.
Jansch spent many years perfecting the complex translation of her original driftwood works into bronze. In doing so she established a technique that often made them indistinguishable from the original.
Her work is held in collections across the world.
Maintaining continuity
We are following an active programme of casting from Heather’s moulds. Our objective in doing so is to finish the editions she began, and as a result many of her sculptures remain available for purchase.
We are keen to maintain the relationships Heather worked so hard to foster during her career. Because of this, we are working closely with Heather’s preferred bronze foundry. We have also retained the continuity of Heather’s representation, and so her work can still be seen at The Diehl Gallery in Jackson, WY, and Sculpture by the Lakes in Dorset, UK.
